Well...if there ever was a bunch of scoundrels and characters...as you will discover we come from all works of life.
Once you are a member of the club then you may place the honoured title of 'Commodore' in front of your name...should you be of the female species then 'Commodoress' is appropriate.

Commodore Ian 'Forbzie' Forbes
Commodoress Mata 'Rum Bitch 2' Forbes

Official Starter and Umpire.

Boat Detail: If he had a boat it would be coloured Invisible Yellow with matching polka dots.

Ian 'Forbzie' Forbes

Biography: Ian is 75 years young and getting older...Mata won't tell us her age. Ian's current occupation is keeping out of Mata's way and Mata keeps out of his way...An old, (very old), time resident of Rarotonga, arriving from Auckland NZ in 1952. Cook Islands Government Printer, then Director of the Cook Islands Philatelic Bureau. Represented the Cook Islands in yachting at the South Pacific Games in 1970. Returned to NZ in 1972 after becoming a life member of the Rarotonga Sailing Club. Employed by the NZ Defence in the Naval Supply Depot as Stock Controller. Returned to the Cook Islands to build his home in Rutaki in 1991. He still rides his motorbike. Currently the Secretary of the Cook Islands Yachting Federation and is the Official Starter for the Rarotonga Sailing Club as well as for the Electron Races. He loves his 'rum ration'...is interested in the sea and environment and is handy with tools. He actually gave up Electron Racing in 1998 because it gave him a 'pain in the neck'...otherwise he still has most of his marbles.

Commodore Peter 'Ehou' Heays
Commodoress Jolene 'Enviro' Bosanquet

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 596, yellow hull, known as 'Forbzie'. This boat used to belong to Forbzie Forbes who after a very successful days racing celebrated with too many tots of rum and somehow his boat changed hands!!!. Sometimes known as the Yellow Peril, this beast, in the hands of the current owner is to be avoided at all costs on the course as she has a tendency to 'seek and ram' any opponent at any time in any phase of the race...and always claiming the 'starboard' rule as justification...In particular stay well clear during the last 10 seconds before the start.

Peter 'Ehou' Heays

TOP

Biography: "Ehou" was born in a manger sometime in1949...three wise men bearing gifts were to call on him shortly thereafter but were unable to secure airline seats and accommodation, so they went on packaged excursion to the Middle East instead. Nevertheless, according to Peter, this gives him some sort of advantage when claiming to be in the right - at the wrong time. He is the current Commodore of the Rarotonga Sailing Club and this fits in with his 'day job' of running the Moana Sands Hotel and Villas on the beach at Titikaveka, where the first ever Rarotonga race in Electrons was held....he also operates a marketing consultancy and a free advisory service for Electron Umpires!
His 'environmental' warrior and understanding wife, Jolene, four kids and four cats of the furry variety, make up the family and they are scattered between Rarotonga and their 'Arcardia Lodge' at Russell, in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
His craft consists of 2 Sunburst sailing dinghies, a kiwikat...the sailing kind, a sailing outrigger dugout canoe...previously a mango tree...and his trusty 'Yellow Peril Forbzie' Electron. He is often seen, with his family, sailing in the Bay of Islands in a square rigger ...that's a big boat with square sails to you landlubbers.
Peter was the first well deserved National Electron Champion for the Cook Islands. Unfortunately his kindness to the other Electron sailors has seen him relegated a little of late.
He will sail anywhere with anyone at anytime and always there is a tot of rum somewhere! ...he is known as 'Ehou' through some quirk of fate which has been lost in the mists of time....

Commodore Desmond 'Toots' Eggleton
Commodoress Mama Cas Eggleton

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 579, red hull, known as 'Cassey's Pride'. This is one of the first boats to arrive in Rarotonga and has had a very chequered career like it's owner ...You have to feel sorry for this boat as it does suffer from verbal and physical abuse if it does not perform. On the other hand, it is the only boat in the whole world that has the rigging 'combed' before every race by a vintage, 1965 faded orange 6 inch plastic comb, that used to belong to Elvis Presley...Toot's swears that this ritual gives 'Cassey's Pride' the edge over the rest in every race.

Biography: Desmond is known affectionately as 'ole Greyhead' because of his hair or 'Toots'...(shortened from Bishop Desmond Tutu.) As an 'original' Electroneer and winner of the first race on Rarotonga, he is revered by some.
'Toots' is an engineer by profession and came to Rarotonga eons ago to build our airport almost single handedly, and despite having to fight off admirers from all over the islands...(he looked a bit like Elvis Presley in those days)...he was trapped by his gorgeous wife Cassie, after whom he named his Electron...a brilliant move!
He has two very bright and successful girls both of whom are in the tourism industry, to ensure their piece of the action, if and when Toots and Cassie retire from their tourism complex on Rarotonga...the Lagoon Lodges.
He is to be seen driving fast cars wherever there is a straight piece of road and he boasts the biggest collection of speeding tickets from all over the world.
He is also a building overseer of small and large projects...mostly for family members who can get him for nothing!
His Electron skills are legendary and his 'buttock clenching' form of concentration while sailing, has earned him another nick name which cannot be repeated on the net. Toots doesn't bother too much with our weekly sailing sessions, as his skills with the Electron are beyond development...but he does come to the big regattas and usually does well. In his younger day he also was a very good Sunburst sailor.

Commodore Thomas 'Count' Koteka
Commodoress Queen 'Lizzie' Koteka

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 635, tangerine coloured hull, affectionately known as 'Jaffa'. Probably the best boat in the Rarotonga fleet according to those in the know! ..great lines, big profile (because she's always in front), a natural in any wind or sea, aggressively competitive yet fair and just, and, well ...really pretty to look at ...many, if not all, fail miserably trying to meet the standards she has set.

Thomas 'Count' Koteka

Biography: The 'Count ' and Lizzie live in Rarotonga with their 3 children ...Teumere, Evaraima and Vaineritua. Thomas has been in the hospitality industry for all his working life, travelling extensively in his youthful years in the Northern Hemisphere gaining first hand experience in his chosen profession as a Chef, (he is in his early 40s now). He returned to his native land to settle down in !985 with Lizzie. They are very much involved with the operation of the Pacific Resort and Villas as part owners and dream one day of building a small intimate boutique hotel on one of the outer islands in the Cooks group ...to them Rarotonga is just far too fast for their lifestyle. Thomas left the Cook Islands when he was 8 years old and went to school in Auckland...on the other hand Lizzie (she's 30 something) grew up in the Cook Islands and Nuie, finally finishing her schooling days in Rotorua. Lizzie also has a working career in the Hotel Industry but now is devoted to raising their family. Thomas is also very interested in anything to do with aeroplanes and whilst 'Electron' racing dominates his play time, he is also devoted to Radio Controlled flying, owning quite a collection of radio controlled planes...15 at last count and over 150 static models. He has also just finished building an 18 foot sailing canoe, modernised from plans loaned to him from Forbzie, which he sails on Club days at the Rarotonga Sailing Club with his son Evaraima as crew. His latest project is re-building a 'Tuk-Tuk', a 3 wheeler motorbike from India which he plans to use as his personal transport to and from the Sailing club...the children think their Dad is weird and will not be a part of the 'Tuk-Tuk' project!

Commodore Sir Jeff 'Starboard' Hill Commodoress Terai Hill

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 571, Navy Blue hull, known as 'Blue Angel'. This boat is one of the original 3 boats that started Electron sailing here in the Cook Islands, originally belonging to 'Count Koteka'. This extremely experienced lady, including her present owner, wears her age and battle scars well and is a source of knowledge for all sailing rules and even those that haven't been invented yet...but in a fair wind and with not too much glare on the lagoon, she will find the top mark every time and is a constant threat to younger hulls... watch out for this grand lady, there's lot's more sailing in her yet!

Sir Jeff 'Starboard' Hill

Biography: Jeffree D'Arcy Hill is 57 years young and is the Managing Director of a Private Cook Islands Retail Business. Because of his ponsey name everyone just calls him 'Sir Jeff'. Shortly after his birth in Nelson New Zealand, his father left to go to war. His formative years were spent in Nelson, Wellington and Palmerston North. His activities as a youth included Athletics, Hockey, Table Tennis and 20 plus years with the Scout Movement. He is also reknowned for being on 'stage' and his most memorable character was as an alcoholic Catholic Priest...he fell into that character real easy! From his 1st marriage he has 4 children and 4 grandchildren. His only employer for 29 years was the NZ Post Office Savings Bank, (later Postbank), and through a request for technical assistance, found himself in the Cook Islands in 1986 to modernise the Cook Islands Post Office Savings Bank.
He soon realised that he did not need the hustle and bustle of the big city and in 1989 was invited and quickly accepted a management position in Rarotonga. He has been here ever since and met and married Terai and together started their own business in the private sector.
At no stage during his early life did he have anything to do with water or watersports. Well, being on Rarotonga changed that and he now is pretty much up to his armpits in water, sailing on Muri Lagoon ...He sails not only the Electron but at the Rarotonga Sailing Club he sails Sunbursts and Lasers. He is a tremendous supporter of children's Optimist sailing and every Thursday, in whatever conditions, you will see Sir Jeff, in waist deep water, using his own time, instructing the children of the Cook Islands how to sail... a debt of gratitude is owed to him by many parents here in the Cooks. And on top of that he is the official Handicapper, Record Keeper and Historian for the Rarotonga Sailing Club...he reckons that all this activity keeps him out of mischief.

Commodore Craig 'Wingnut' Robertson
Commodoress Louise 'Rum Bitch' Robertson

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 631, burgundy hull, known as 'Celtic Lass'. This boat is quite inconsistent, but when she's on form (unfortunately she seldom is out of form) she's cunning and elusive like a fox, and if you let your guard down just for an instant, from out of the mezzanine seats the 'Rum Bitch' will take you out with her fiery tongue and her evil poison disguised as 'rum and coke'...be very careful. Of all the boats in the club's fleet... this one is quite phenomenal...because, before she can perform at all, Air New Zealand, yes...the Pride of the Pacific, has to fly to Rarotonga, on business class and accommodate at the best Hotel on Rarotonga, a replacement 'Wingnut', so 'Celtic Lass's' owner can go and play with the buoys...'God' does act in mysterious ways.......

Craig 'Wingnut' Robertson

TOP

Biography: 'Wingnut's' real name is Denis and he's married to Louise...both are in their mid 30s and Denis reckons that he doesn't get enough sex. They have 2 children...Mark and Leanna. Denis is employed as an Aircraft Engineer for Air New Zealand and when he grows up wants to come back to Rarotonga and buy a hotel so that he can work half days and go sailing for the rest of the day... really, would you buy a used car from this man!
Craig is an accomplished sailor in his own right and is the current National Sailing Champion in the Sunburst and Laser class...the Electron Championship still eludes him, but many predict that the 2000 Nationals in October could be his. Many at the Rarotonga Sailing Club seeks his advice on all matters related to sailing. He is a skillful tactician on the sailing course and many is the time spectators will witness Denis come in from behind to take race...it's magic to watch.
His most satisfying sailing experience was getting 'Toots' Eggelton to do a penalty. His biggest turn off from sailing is when someone packs up their boat and goes home when things aren't going right.

Commodore Owen 'Woodchip' Trott Commodoress Teresa 'RW' Trott

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 627, navy blue hull, known as 'TLC'. This boat has been through the wars but still keeps going and going and going and going...Seriously...'TLC' is quite temperamental and constantly seeks the guidance of the owner otherwise tends to go her own way on the race course. Many remember the time when 'TLC' decided to take on the expanse of Muri lagoon without guidance in the middle of a race and 'Woodchip' charged forward, without care for personal safety and paddled effortlessly against tide and wind almost to the edge of the lagoon, to correct 'TLC' on the error of her ways...chivalrous and courageous...most of us would have asked one of the kids to go out and do this task!

TOP

Biography: Owen and Teresa have just finished building their new house and it's bloody magnificent and has great ocean views...we all look forward to the opening bash. Owen manages the CITC Building Centre and Teresa is a Consultant for the South Pacific Forum. In fact Owen is the one we all look to for advice on boat building, as he was a Naval Architect for many of his 59 years. He reckons that the 'Electron' is the perfect boat! Everyone thinks that 'TLC' stands for tender loving care...but it really stands for Teresa, Lara and Charles...wife, daughter and son of Owen...cool eh!

Commodoress Willie Barton

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 661, navy blue hull, known as 'No Name', this is Willie's boat. No one is really sure when was the last time that Willie sailed her boat, but she is there religiously every Sunday to support us all. Many believe that she is just watching, learning and absorbing the tactics of the present competitors and one day, in the not too distant future, she'll pounce and take us all out.

Commodore Ted 'Basher' Nia

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 628, navy blue hull, known as 'Heinecken'. Commodore Chris 'CRC' Clemmet Commodoress Carol 'Missus' Clemmet

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 566, green hull, known as 'Curved Air'.This boat used to be in the ownership of 'Ehou' Heays and it was heard by many that boat no. 566 actually breathed a sigh of relief when she was taken over by the current owner...under a new name and very caring owner, this boat, one of the originals, is back, battle scars healed and spick and span from the top of the mast to her keel...is this the boat to watch out for on the circuit many ask?

Biography: 'CRC' and Carol have been resident in Rarotonga for a number of years now and they are visited by their 3 grown up children from New Zealand on a regular basis. He is an 'upholsterer' by profession and since his arrival to our shores the furnishings and awnings of the homes and businesses of Rarotonga are the best looking in the whole of the South Pacific...really! Tim 'Irish' Nation

Biography: 'Irish' was born 37 years ago in Blackrock, Cork, Ireland...he spent 15 years in New Zealand learning how to fish before finding his way to the Cook Islands not so long ago. He's a jeweler now and his work with the unique Black Pearls from the Northern Islands of the Cook group, is sought after by visitors to our islands. Commodore Mike 'Tinarse' Chevin

Boat Details: Boat/sail no. 621, lagoon blue hull, known as 'Cool Running'...this boat must have a lucky charm imbedded in the resin as it consistently wins races in the freakiest wind conditions. Original owner was Neale McKegg, then she belonged to the 'Count ' for a short time before Mike took ownership. You have to take this boat very seriously as she not only looks sleek but points higher than most boats in the fleet...lucky for the rest of us that the current owner hasn't used this to his advantage yet...
